Over the span of ten days, I completed three Copilot certifications that, at first glance, might seem only loosely connected:
Three exams in ten days was certainly an interesting challenge, but what I found more valuable was how differently each certification approached the changing technology landscape.
Together, they provided three perspectives I believe are increasingly important: using AI effectively, understanding how AI can transform an organization, and understanding the collaborative development platform behind a tremendous amount of today’s technology.
AB-730: AI Business Professional
Of the three, AB-730 has probably had the most immediate impact on my day-to-day work.
The certification focuses on using generative AI tools, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, to improve business processes and individual productivity. It covers concepts such as prompt engineering, context engineering, large language models, and applying AI across familiar applications such as Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
I initially approached AB-730 partly because AB-730 or AB-731 is a requirement associated with my Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) renewal. But studying for AB-730 quickly became more than checking a certification box. I was already using Copilot extensively in my daily workload. Studying for the exam forced me to step back and think more deliberately about how I use it. The difference sounds subtle, but it matters. There is a big difference between simply asking Copilot a question and intentionally providing the right context, defining the desired outcome, refining the prompt, evaluating the response, and using AI as part of a repeatable workflow.
Those concepts have already changed how I approach my daily work. I am thinking more about the quality of the context I provide, how I structure prompts, when an agent or Copilot experience is appropriate, and how AI can help accelerate work without replacing the judgment that still needs to come from the person using it. For me, that practical value was the biggest surprise of the three certifications.
AB-731: AI Transformation Leader
AB-731 looks at AI through a different lens. Where AB-730 asks, “How can I use AI more effectively in my work?”, AB-731 moves toward, “How can an organization use AI to change how it works?”
The focus shifts from personal productivity toward AI strategy, adoption, business processes, responsible AI, innovation, and aligning AI investments with organizational objectives. That distinction made AB-730 and AB-731 good certifications to study close together.
- AB-730 is much closer to the individual worker and the workflow.
- AB-731 moves up a level and looks at the organization.
For anyone involved in technology leadership, solution architecture, skilling, adoption, or organizational transformation, I think understanding both perspectives are valuable. Successful AI adoption requires more than deploying technology. People need to understand where AI actually provides value, how workflows should change, and how adoption can be approached responsibly.
GH-900: GitHub Foundations
GH-900 was the outlier of the three, but that was also part of its value. GitHub Foundations covers Git and GitHub fundamentals, repositories, commits, branches, collaboration, issues, pull requests, project management, security, administration, and the GitHub community.
Unlike AB-730 and AB-731, this certification is not primarily about Copilot or AI transformation. It establishes the foundation for understanding how modern teams collaborate on software, documentation, automation, and increasingly AI-assisted development.
I have worked around GitHub for years, but there is a difference between knowing enough to accomplish a task and deliberately studying the platform from end to end. GH-900 helped reinforce that foundation.
Three Certifications, Three Perspectives
The easiest way I found to distinguish the three is by the question each one tries to answer:
AB-730: How do I use AI effectively?
This is the practical, everyday Copilot and generative AI certification. It focuses on how an individual can use AI to improve productivity and business workflows.
AB-731: How do we use AI to transform the organization?
This is the leadership and transformation perspective. It focuses on recognizing AI opportunities, adoption, responsible AI, process improvement, and aligning AI initiatives with business objectives.
GH-900: How do we collaborate and build using GitHub?
This provides the technical collaboration foundation: repositories, Git, branching, pull requests, issues, projects, security, and community.
The Unexpected Value of AB-730
If I had to identify the certification that has already influenced my work the most, it would probably be AB-730. I originally had a practical reason for pursuing it. I needed an AB-730 or AB-731 credential as part of my MCT renewal. What I did not expect was how much studying the material would make me reconsider my own use of Copilot. I use AI throughout the day, but preparing for AB-730 reinforced something that is easy to overlook:
Using Copilot frequently is not necessarily the same thing as using Copilot effectively. This actually led to a blog post I wrote in support of a hackathon project at work on Tokenomics: Think Like a Zero-Waste Architect.
Understanding context, prompt construction, iteration, grounding, and where different Copilot experiences fit into a workflow can noticeably change the quality of the results. That knowledge has already started paying dividends in my normal workload.
Final Thoughts
Passing AB-730, AB-731, and GH-900 within ten days made for a busy stretch of studying, but I came away with more than three new certifications.
- AB-730 strengthened how I think about working with AI.
- AB-731 strengthened how I think about leading with AI.
- GH-900 strengthened my understanding of collaborating and building with GitHub.
If your work touches Microsoft 365 Copilot, AI adoption, technical leadership, or modern development practices, these certifications complement each other surprisingly well. And if you are already a heavy Copilot user, I would not dismiss AB-730 as simply a fundamentals certification.
